One-track minds…

Evie scouts the northern woods for a troublesome ogre. But there are other creatures besides ogres lurking in the forest!

~~~~~~
‘Ropes??’ I thought, suddenly alarmed.  Getting untangled from the net while trying to reason with notoriously unreasonable creatures was one thing…I couldn’t let them get me fully restrained and vulnerable until I had a better handle on the situation!
Wait!” I cried, writhing in the net.  “You don’t need to tie me up!  I was just trying to help you!  There’s an ogre in these woods, and I don’t want to see you all get hurt.  I’m no threat to you!”
“Youse?  A threat t’ us?”  The snotling leader cackled.  “We’s th’ only threat ‘n dese woods, girlie.  We’s da threats to youse!  Ain’t no ogre ‘round ‘ere none, neither.  This’ our  woods.”
Hands gripped me while the net lifted off my lower legs.  Other hands held the net taut over my upper legs and body, keeping me well controlled.  My booted ankles were brought together and wrapped in coils of rope.  I tried kicking with my feet, to which the leader replied, “tighter!”
‘At least they’re not stripping my boots off,’  I thought. That was a good sign.  I’d heard stories of snotling depravity, especially with human women.  ‘I’m going to be ok,’ I thought for a moment.  I just needed to be patient, and wait for them to make a mistake or leave an opening to escape.
Those hopes dimmed a little, though, when one of the little creatures grasped my inner leg and squeezed it.  “Hehe, ya think the bossll give us a taste, eh??”
Uh-oh…Evie’s in a little bind now…
Evie scouts the northern woods for a troublesome ogre. But there are other creatures besides ogres lurking in the forest!
“Quit callin’ me ‘li’l guy,’ girlie!” he snarled in a lower, more commanding voice.  “Youse the pris’ner of th’ Snotling Squad nows!”
Snotlings?  I thought.  I’d heard stories of creatures called snotlings before.  They were like goblins, only smaller.  And while goblins were impulsive and horny and self-destructive and generally unpleasant, snotlings were supposedly driven completely by their most base desires, with no impulse control or self-preservation at all.  I could actually be in a bit of real trouble here.
Looking up at my green captor and his orange mount standing over me, he now looked a lot less like a cuddly little goblin youngling, and a lot more like a gnarled and greasy little wretch with malicious intent.  What a difference a little perspective made.
And now—as the creature said—I really was his prisoner!
He also seemed to be the leader of his little squad of snotlings, because he began barking orders at the others.  He warned them to keep the net taut and keep my body pinned down until they could restrain my limbs.
“Tie dems ropes nice ‘en tight!”
My chest burned as I tried to catch my breath.  I wanted to get my hands underneath me and push myself up, get the net off me, but I couldn’t get my fingers and hands untangled.  And something seemed to be holding the net down to the ground.
“Hey!” I called out when I got my breath back.  I craned my neck to see my little green captor standing over me.  “I was only trying to help you, little guy!”
I heard high-pitched laughter all around me.  I sensed movement and felt tugging on the net.  Again I tried to push myself up off the ground, but weight on the net pinned me down.
I writhed about anxiously, looking all around, to see more of the little creatures surrounding me.  There were several of them, and they were holding or standing on the net to keep me trapped.
For the first time since I met the youngling, I began to feel like I might be in some danger.
Worse, the cold snow was chilling my bare flesh from chin to knee, and soaking through my white linen blouse.  I was never going to get the mud out of the fabric!
It’s getting good!
Evie scouts the northern woods for a troublesome ogre. But there are other creatures besides ogres lurking in the forest!
My confusion made me pause…and I paused just a second too long.
I was still straightening and turning to see who the little guy was shouting at when something whizzed by my head…and something else struck me in the back, knocking me forward.
I gasped out loud as I realized it was a weighted throw net!
Someone or something behind me had cast a net over me.  I was already off-balance from leaning over the little guy, so I couldn’t prevent the net carrying me to the ground.
My knees landed first and slid on the snowy ground.  I tried to put my arms out to break my fall, but my hands tangled in the net.
My chest hit the ground hard, knocking my breath out and stunning me for a moment.
He looked up at me with an odd expression, and then he gritted his teeth and scrunched up his face in anger.  The thought crossed my mind that for a youngling, he had a face only a mother could love.
That brought to mind rumors I’d heard that goblins didn’t have mothers—at least not goblin mothers, anyway…
I shook my head to clear those unpleasant thoughts, and realized the youngling had turned his head.  He was no longer looking up at me, he was looking past me.  It was almost as if he were looking at someone else…
Suddenly, he yelled in a deep and authoritative voice:  “SNATCH ‘ER, YA RUNTS!!”
I was so fascinated by the squig licking my hand that I almost forgot about the youngling.
The poor little guy was struggling to push himself up on one elbow and he wiped his nose.
“Owwie…” he sniffled.  He looked angry, but his eyes watered as if he was about to cry.
That made me feel even worse about dropping him and scolding him.
Once again, I bent over to comfort him, keeping a close eye on his drooling squig and it’s inquisitive tongue.
“Gosh, I’m so so sorry, little guy…I didn’t mean to drop you, but you startled me…”
He glanced upward as I reached out my hand to him.
“Come on,” I encouraged him.  “Let’s go find your parents or your friends.”
The poor youngling hit the new-fallen snow at my feet with a wet ‘PLOP’ sound.
I gasped.  The poor little guy!
He was so tiny that he really fell a long way down.  I hoped he wasn’t hurt!
“I’m so sorry, little guy,” I called out.  “You startled me…”
I started to bend over to see if he was alright, and his squig snarled at me protectively.
“Easy there, big guy,” I said softly to the squig, holding my open palm out to him.
The squig sniffed my hand twice, then began to lap at it happily with his long tongue.  I’d heard that squigs were voracious, and he did look intimidating with all those teeth—but he was just like a friendly puppy.
He just wanted to lick and sniff everything!
“Owww!”  I cried out, in shock and surprise.  I couldn’t believe the little youngling bit me!  I was so startled that I yanked my hand back.
“That was rude!”  I scolded him.
I didn’t even realize I’d let him go until I saw him falling away from me.
I instantly felt bad—I didn’t mean to drop him!
Despite my soft reassuring voice, my helpful offer, and my big smile, I must have frightened him.
Or, perhaps the youngling took offense to having his prisoner pick him up and try to hug him.
For whatever reason, the little guy lunged forward and bit me, right on the hand!!!
Thankfully his sharp little teeth landed on my glove, and didn’t break through…but still hurt!!
‘Oh dear,’ I thought.  ‘Now I’ve really upset the little guy, and probably scared him, too!’
The youngling’s game was fun, but I knew I’d better see about getting him back to his parents soon, they were probably worried about him.  And I still had a job to do…I didn’t like the idea of him being out here all alone with an ogre roaming the area.
“Are you lost, little guy?”  I asked, holding him up closer to my face so we could see eye-to-eye.  I figured I’d be a lot less intimidating that way.  “You can come with me, if you like!”
