Deena and Camilia wasted no time in celebration. They immediately took a couple steps back and squared their shoulders toward each other.

Breathing heavily, they stared across the small gap at each other, each with a small grin.

They exchanged nods of silent congratulations that their alliance to defeat Esseni had worked, and that each had made it through to the final matchup of the night.

“Quite a mess we’ve made here,” Camilia offered in an attempt to infuse some levity.

“We’ve each done our share,” Deena replied evenly.

“Not sure that’s true,” Camilia shot back. “By my count, I’ve scored more wins to get here than you.”

Deena shrugged. “I prefer quality to quantity. And I’d suggest you’re far more fatigued than I am by now.”

“That matters none, newbie,” Camilia shot back. She motioned toward the laid-out form of Shanna beneath her feet wearing the gold of the reigning champion. “I beat the former champion. The gold is already mine. Beating you to claim it is just a formality.”

“We going to fight at some point?” Deena taunted. “Or are you going to talk me into unconsciousness?”

Tired as she was, Camilia got a boost of energy from her defeat of Selene. She stood above Selene’s contorted body and watched the two remaining women locked in a heated battle on the other side of the platform.

She knew she could wait until one defeated the other, knowing that they also would lose strength from a prolonged fight. Perhaps Deena would get lucky and knock out Esseni, leaving Camilia what she perceived as an easier path to gold.

Then she remembered how she and Selene had allied to defeat Julia. Perhaps she could align with Deena to gang up on Esseni?  Or perhaps, she could distract them both just enough to prevail.

A wiser move may have been to hang back, recover, and preserve her strength.

But this close to the title? She wasn’t going to be passive about it. 

She rushed across the platform to join in.

Julia’s knockout blow left Zoey on her back, sprawled over Jessica, whose uplifted toned rear was now Zoey’s headrest! Zoey’s limp neck left her face tilted forward with her chin resting on her chest.

Julia stood triumphantly over Zoey, surveying her handiwork with a wicked grin. After a moment of gloating, she surveyed the remaining fighters on the platform, confidently looking for her next matchup.

“Alright, who’s next?” she called out, hoping to distract the other sparring pairs.

She decided to let Deena and Esseni wear each other out, and turned instead toward Camilia and Selene. “Which one of you two wants to go down next?” she taunted them.

Knowing how formidable Julia was, Camilla and Selene exchanged glances, nodded, and then ganged up on Julia! They each took a step backward and turned to counter Julia’s approach.

On the opposite side of the platform, Deena and Esseni continued their measured pace. After a near miss by Deena, Esseni went on offense, causing Deena to block and take steps back against Jessica and Zoey.

“You’re still pretty new here,” Esseni hissed. “You really think you have what it takes to best me?”

“New or not, I’ll not bow down to anyone, no matter how legendary,” Deena replied.

“Legendary, eh?” Esseni snickered. “You trying to flatter me, blondie?”

“If to cross this bridge, thy desire be,” intoned the glowing orb, “answer thee, my questions three!“

Deena’s travels were interrupted by a luminous sphere floating above a bridge. It guarded the only crossing of the great lava flow for miles in either direction, and Deena had neither the time not the patience for the delay.

“I care not whether you are demon or mage,” she replied, unsheathing her sword. “I have no time for silly games. You will yield.”

“My questions, you will find, are simple and fair.” The orb pulsed and shimmered as it ‘spoke.’ “Even for one such as you, graced with blonde hair.”

“Hey now, watch yourself,” Deena warned with a scowl. “Fine. Ask away…but may we dispense with the annoying rhyming?”

“Fine,” the orb replied with a huff. “First, what is your name, by what are you known?”

“I am Deena, former Captain of the Guard,” she offered. Then with a snort, she added, “and, I suppose, Usurper of the Realm.”

“A fine name indeed, by those you know best. Where does your path lead, what is your quest?”

“I warned you about the rhyming,” Deena sneered, clearly irritated by now. “My quest? I don’t know…go on a raid, hopefully get paid, maybe get laid.”

“Charming,” the orb scoffed. “An easy one, for you then. What is your favorite color?”

“Favorite color?” she replied in surprise. “Umm…gold? Red? Wait…no, blue!”

“A pity,” the orb mused. “Due to that pause, you’ll fail in your cause.”

Deena found herself levitated in the air, swinging her arms helplessly, as the orb forced her over the edge of the bridge. “Wait!! You didn’t ask if that was my final answer!”

“Such rules are unneeded, excepting a game show.” The orb’s voice was actually chuckling now. “My warning unheeded, into the lava you go!”

“STOPPP!” she screamed as she fell. “I can’t take any more rhyming!!!!”

“If your desire to Usurp the Realm is insistent,” the voice of the orb called out. “Perhaps you should first become flame resistant!”

========

Unfortunately for Deena, ‘the orb’ tolerated neither indecisiveness nor impatience…so into the lava flow, she had to go.

The above is the result of a fun little game my friend @Dxc2005 initiated – answer three questions and cross the bridge; fail, and be tossed into the lava. Huge thanks to him for including Deena in his fun game. And credit also to Sabrina “Sabasha” for that great ‘fire resistant’ line!

The twenty combatants stood in a circle, enshrouded in darkness.

Dancing flames in cauldrons marked the corners of the platform on which they stood. The luminescence of their lingerie and fighting mitts gave off the only other light, casting a soft glow over toned bodies and soft flesh.

One by one the women had been delivered to this platform in the middle of the lake, hooded until the moment all were in position, preserving the element of surprise. Many could have guessed at some of the names on the roster, but none could have predicted them all.
